Bad Apples - Rating: * * * (Reviewed by Chloe Davies)

‘Bad Apples’ is a slasher horror about two masked teenage girls who go on a killing spree on Halloween. There isn’t much of a plot for most of the film, and it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense until the end. However, there is still some enjoyment to be had despite its flaws. To get the negative stuff out of the way, the sound design/editing let it down at times. That said, the music used overall added a lot of atmosphere and was chosen well, it was just the sound effects and audio quality that left a lot to be desired every so often throughout the film. In addition, the last scene could have been shortened or cut altogether, as it seemed like an unnecessary epilogue and only served to lengthen its run time.

Despite its problems, which can most likely be put down to a low budget, it has enough redeeming qualities to still make it an enjoyable watch. The dialogue between characters is really good, particularly between Ella (Brea Grant) and her husband Robert (Graham Skipper), which is improved upon even more by the actors who deliver an enjoyable performance and add charisma. Furthermore, I liked the camerawork which appeared to be handheld and gave the film a voyeuristic feel without being too jarring.

The gory practical effects are also impressive, in particular for one of the murders towards the conclusion of the film. The very first murder is also intense and surprising. It’s just frustrating that the murders don’t seem to have any real connection to each other and the plot is so empty that the whole story needs explaining in the last scene.

Overall, ‘Bad Apples’ isn’t something I’d rush to watch again, but I enjoyed it for what it was as a slasher fan and really liked some of the performances. Grant and Skipper are what really make it worth watching, as they bring great delivery and charisma, which is much needed in something that relies on their characters rather than the plot the make it entertaining.
