Say what you will about legendary actors doing comedies in their later career, which let us be honest the critics seem to loath, but there is something entertaining about them. This is something I will look at more in my upcoming Ian Simons Says feature (coming soon to a snakebite website near you) but there is too much criticism out there for movies that, to be honest, are actually really fun. Going In Style is falls into this category along side Last Vegas and the very entertaining De Niro comedy The Intern, all three very entertaining and very funny films which shows that these fine actors can wag their comedy chops and give us some laugh out loud funny stuff.
Going In Style follows Joe Harding (Michael Caine) and his two close friends Willie Davis (Morgan 'the voice of god' Freeman) and Albert Gardiner (Alan Arkin) as they plan a bank heist to get back their pension money which was stolen from them after they were let go in their jobs. With Joe's house on the line the old timers enlist the help of a petty criminal (and pet shop owner) to plan the perfect robbery and cermet a future for their loved ones in the process.
Michael Caine leads the charge on this one, and this screen legend is bloody good. Caine s a very good comedy actor, something alot of film fans forget, and this role proves that point. He isn't afraid to do stupid things for a laugh, and the same goes for Morgan Freeman. One of the funniest moments in the film, for me, was in the supermarket scenes where Joe and Willie practice shoplift in an attempt to train for their upcoming bank heist. This obviously goes hilariously wrong with the two men bulging with way too much produce leading to a chase between and on foot police officer and the two me on a mobility trolley. Belly laughs came from Willie using a bag of flour as a kind of smoke screen. However the comedy doesn't start and end here, the film is full of laugh out loud moments throughout, but there is also a touching tale about family and friendship which keeps the audience invested throughout.
Going In Style reminds me of the British old people robbing a bank film Golden Years, but there is something more engaging about Going In Style. I'm not sure if it is the chemistry between the three leads or just a more polished script but if this is a new kind of sub genre then Going in Style is the benchmark the others should live up to.
It is great to see Caine and Freeman still going strong today, I'm not to well versed in the work of Arkin though, but Going style is a charming fun and laugh out loud funny film which I really hope doesn't drift under the radar. If you enjoyed Last Vegas you will love this film.
