14.  Grandia

PS1 had so many  great RPG's and one of the m ore entertaining of these games, outside of the Final Fantasy games was Grandia.

With an interesting fight style and an engaging story I would still recommend this to gamers today

Picture
13. PaRappa the Rapper

Come on how could this NOT get on this list. who would have thought a game with rapping and dancing would be a hit. The little dog with the hat will always have a place in my heart. Who could ever forget the onion headed karate master? PUNCH PUNCH KICK. KICK KICK PUNCH.

Picture
12. Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

Follow me.....NO. Ahhhhhh Abe's Oddysee, the side scrolling juggernaught of the PS1 which sees the player take on slave worker Abe who is trying to save his kind before the are all turned into food.

HOURS were played on this game...HOURS!!! with some challenging puzzles and funny little moments you will never forget, this game is perfect!

Picture
11. Final Fantasy 6

A release for PS1 Final Fantasy 6 is the first of the Final Fantasy series to hit the list. FF6 has always be called the best FF game story wise and character wise but even today this game stands up. It even came with a demo of the upcoming PS2 game Final Fantasy X which we will cover in our top 10 PS2 games list later this month.

Picture
10. WWF Smackdown! Know Your Role

The second of the WWF/WWE Smackdown franchise to be released on PS1, Know your Role to all the good bits from the first and added more match types and an even better carrer mode. I spent hours creating my own roster of wrestlers, creating the perfect move set to destroy my friends. This game was the launching pad which made the later games some of the best wrestling games out there even today.

Picture
9. Metal Gear Solid

Snake...Snake....SNAAAAAAAAAAAKE! MGS is one of the most ingenious games on the PS1 for an older audience. It's an action movie inside your console and had one of the hardest boss battles I had ever played at the time PSYCHO MANTIS, that guy was a bastard...well until you plugged your controller into slot two then he was a piece of piss. With hidden extras, a kick ass sound track and a fight on top of a giant robot this game blew my little socks off.

Picture
8. Soul Blade

The first and the original which spawned the Soul Calibur series, Soul Blade was the only fighting game of my youth i spent hours trying to beat. The weapon based combat was ace and i loved the array of characters on show. I personally thing this is one of the best fighting games the PS1 ever produced and it wasn't till the Dreamcast's Power Stone and Soul Calibur that i found anything better.

Picture
7. Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars

I originally got introduced to this game through watching my older brother playing it. It was a game which was challenging but also had a brilliant story. From the explosion in the Cafe to the beautiful cartoon animation Broken Sword will always be one of my favorite series starters and i one of the BEST point and click games on the console

Picture
6. Time Crisis

When I was younger I lived in a seaside town where one of the main attractions was the brilliant arcades. I remember the hours spent sticking coins into the Time Crisis game, trying to complete it before my money ran out, so when i saw Time Crisis for PS1 AND the fact you have your own gun like in the arcade this became my obsession. This was the new generation of light gun games, making the light gun popular like it was in the old nintendo days. if you missed out on this gem you NEED to play it.

Picture
5. Final Fantasy 8

For people who know me this might come as a shocker being at number 5 but hey ho. Final Fantasy 8 is AMAZING, Square Enix had gone from blocky characters in FF7 and are now giving us a more polished game with a brilliant opening scene and the second best soundtrack in videogame history. It's a love story, it's a war story and it was grand. Squall was aided but a whole cast of memorable characters and villains and at the time it was so cool to see our favorite summons realized in a more visually stunning way.

Picture
4. Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 is the BEST survival horror ever made. With two (or four if you unlock Eda and the special ops) main games to play through and the best zombie action in PS1 history. The game was visually amazing and the story worked so well. Leon is one of the best characters in the series (see resident evil 4) and with the action now in Raccoon City we get to explore more than before while hoping that the big bad doesn't come out of nowhere are kill you.

Picture
3. Final Fantasy 9

After wowing us with the amazing graphics of Final Fantasy 8, Square Enix went down a more cartoonish route with Final Fantasy 9.....and it looked BEAUTIFUL. Final Fantasy takes everything with love about Final Fantasy series and places us in a steampunk environment with an odd but brilliant cast of characters. I have recently started replaying FF9 and it seems even better the 5th time around. Zidane is a great lead, something which is missing from all the final fantasy games after FF X-2. FF9 is a must play game and is definitely on of the best Final Fantasy games of all time.

Picture
2. Suikoden

Suikoden is a hidden gem. This game is in fact the only other game next to my number 1 game on this list that i will even to this day same is one of the best games ever made. It is a great example of JRPG with a story of war and friendship and oh i don't know 100 CHARACTERS YOU CAN PLAY AS!!! Suikoden has an EPIC team of characters and they all live in your castle in the middle of nowhere as you stick it the the royal family who screwed you over. Now available to own on PS3 Store as being one of the hardest game to get hold of in the UK this is a game you should check out.

Picture
1. Final Fantasy 7

Oh come on you know there is no contest here. Final Fantasy 7 is the greatest JRPG to ever be made. The cast of characters has never been beaten in any other Final Fantasy game that followed, the story is immense and we witness the most heartbreaking death of a main character ever. The soundtrack is the most perfect soundtrack in videogame history hands down and at the time this was the first example of a 3D RPG which stll works well today. Final Fantasy 7 will never be beaten and is a game I still play to this day.

Videogames, like alot of you reading this, were a HUGE part of my childhood. I remember the days of playing Mario of the Nes and the Snes and playing Donkey Kong Country for hours but it wasn't till I was given my very first Playstation that my love for the videogames really begun. My brothers were the ones to get me into videogames and as the youngest in our house that got me wanting more and more to play however the more played my taste in games were slightly different. We all have games that we played for hours and not all of us have the same favorites and this is the beauty of videogames, the mass of titles available to all walks of life.

This list defines my childhood of gaming, from JRPG's to Survival horror to even the great puzzle games that let you close your mind for a few hours while you popped some  bubbles. This is the first half of the list s enjoy my 30 - 15 choices and let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
Picture
30. Vandal Hearts

Vandal Hearts was the game that got me into the more strategy turn based games like the Final Fantasy Tactics series and the Suikoden Tactics game on PS2 (different list for a different time!)

Vandal Hearts had the same mix of Magic and turn based battles that I loved from Final Fantasy but with a grid system which was very new to me.

With a great story and a great cast of characters this is a game which still holds up today

Picture
29. Duke Nukem

He is there to kick ass and chew bubble gum....and he is all outta bubble gum yes this is where i was first introduced to the arse kicking alien killing bad ass Duke Nukem, a game i really shouldn't have been playing but...well I had older brothers. The games was a bloody brutal game similar to Doom but with smut which made me feel like a rebel in my young days, yeah it's nothing compared to today's videogames where we you need to have sex to fill your health bar (looking at you God of War) but for the time this was the game to brag to you friends that you were playing.

Picture
28. ECW Hardcore Revolution

ECW.... ECW.... ECW.... the hard hitting wrestling of on of the most beloved wrestling companies of the 90'S had 2 videogame outtings but my favourite of the bunch was Hardcore Revolution.
It brought things to the table you wished you could do in WWF Smackdown! giving you the chance to take weapons from the crowd and bludgeon your opponent  with some of the most random items. Yes i know this is more or less the same as WWF Attitude but it was still fun to play as RVD and Sandman in a barbwire match.

Picture
27. Rayman

HE HAS HANDS FLOATING IN MID AIR!!!!! Rayman was a big hit on it's release and is a charcter who spawned several sequels for many years and even saw the Rabbids get their own games but Rayman's first outing will always hold a special place in my heart. One of the best side scrollers on PS1 with a colourful backdrop and a great lead character with his floating fists of fury. Still holds up today as well.

Picture
26. Silent Hill

Well this game was bloody creepy on release. The mist, the monsters the creepy nurses, Silent Hill was the first Resident Evil with more horror. Silent Hill was like a Horror Film in you console with a hard hitting story line and hair raising horrific visuals this was the game you NEEDED as a horror fan. This was one of the best examples of how to do a survival right on PS1. Shame about the films....

Picture
25. Ehrgeiz

Ehrgeiz is a little known game which alot of people may not have heard of, but this is a gem if you are a fan of Final Fantasy. This is a different type of fighting game, pitting your fighters in a 3D arena with interactive environments making it a change from the Tekken games. The big draw for this game however is the ability to play as Cloud, Tifa, Vincent, Yuffie, Sephiroth and even Zack from Final Fantasy 7 which was amazing!

Picture
24: Gex: Enter the Gecko

A character who has disappeared from our consoles over the years is the lovable gecko Gex. Enter The Gecko was one of those games you could just play for hours, collecting the remotes, reveling in the parodies of movies like James Bond and Star Wars. In the European version the game even gives a mention at the start to UK TV gold Supermarket Sweep! well there you go.....

Picture
23. Discworld

Even though I was never a fan of the books I  LOVED Discworld. This games is bloody hilarious and was the second point and click game I feel in love with after playing Broken Sword. The jokes were perfect, the puzzles were challenging at times and...I just loved it, but sadly is one of these games I just can't find cheaply anymore.

Picture
22. Dino Crisis

Talking of Survival Horror's being pretty good, do you know what Resident Evil was missing? Fucking Dinosaurs! but never fear Dino Crisis is here to save the day. This is a well thought out game, It was like Jurrasic park meets Resident Evil and had a pretty solid plot line to boot. Not a game you hear much about nowadays but wouldn't you love to see a PS4 reboot of this? I bloody sure would.

Picture
21. Chocobo Racing

Final Fantasy's answer to Mario Kart, Chocobo Racing takes one of the most iconic animals in videogame history and gives us a racing game which is pretty damn fun. With a good story mode and a great selection of final fantasy creatures to choose from this is the best alternative to Mario Kart we had on the Playstation

Picture
20. Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo

This was a tough one to pick as it was between this and Bust a Move 2 but in the end I loved the addition of the Street Fighter series a little bit more. Super Puzzle Fighter is one of those, sit an d play for hours, kind of games like Tetris where 3 hours later you realize you are still telling your self 'just one more turn'. It's bubble popping greatness.

Picture
19. Micro Machines V3

I'm not a massive racing game fan, hence why you won't see Gran Turismo or Ridge Racer on this list HOWEVER there was one racing game that topped the list of some of the best racing games of all time and that is Micro Machines V3. A top down racing masterclass with beautiful courses and a fun array of cars to choose from. Who doesn't like the kitchen table track!!

Picture
18. Point Blank

The first of two lightgun shooting games on this list Point Blank was a fun mini game style shooter that gave me hours of fun. Another game my eldest brother got me playing this one, with fun characters and modes for all the family to enjoy.

Picture
17. Crash Bandicoot

You can't do a top 30 list and not include the PS1 mascot Crash. Now i'm sure I will get some people saying Crash Bandicoot should be higer in this list but i say.....there are BETTER titles to come in my opinion however this is one of the first PS1 gaming experiences I had, next to the original Tekken. I loved the gameplay on the first game and  with a HD remaster of the series coming soon to PS4 a whole new generation will be able to experience the Bandicoot in all his first game glory.

Picture
16. Pandemonium

Oh how I love this game, visually this game was amazing at the time, you play as Fargus, a joker, and Nikki, who casts a spell that destroys the town. The goal is to reach the Wishing Engine, where they can wish the town back to normal.

This is a fun mix of 2D and 3D and should be a must of your list if you are looking to replay these classics.

Picture
15. Tekken 2

It was hard to pick between Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 but in the end i had to go for the second installment of the series. The introduction to some new faces and the unlockable Rodger and Alex the boxing dinosaur and kangeroo just brings back more amazing memories. visually not as good as Tekken 3 but still more of a classic

So this is our first half of the top 30. Do you disagree with our choices? which games should have been placed higher? and which games would you put in your top ten? let us know in the comments below, and keep your eyes open for 14 - 1 of my top 30.
